We recommend regular check ups. This may mean visits 3, 6, 12 or 24 monthly, depending upon the individual. Routine check ups not only allow us to inspect for decay and gum disease but provide a chance for us to identify any loose fillings, bite problems, swellings, breath problems (halitosis) and oral cancer. Problems caught early, are easily corrected, quickly, and painlessly. The old adage 'prevention is better than cure' is never more applicable than in dentistry.
During your appointment, we:
- will ask if you have any problems
- will update your medical history
- will check all hard tissues of the mouth (teeth, jaws, joints, etc.)
- will check all soft tissues of the mouth (gums, lips, tongue, etc.)
- may check how well you clean your teeth
- may take X-rays to see parts of the mouth not visible with the naked eye
- may, time permitting, provide a simple scaling and polishing
- may discuss dietary issues, tobacco and alcohol use (as all can harm
your oral health)
- will, if necessary, discuss any findings with you, to include any treatment
options and costs
- will refer you to the hygienist, if necessary
- will perform a visual oral cancer check
