Tips for a healthy mind and mouth while at home

Now that most of us are spending more time at home at the moment (except the country’s heroes, key workers) we all should be practising good oral hygiene habits…as well as social distancing of course! It’s a difficult and uncertain time for everyone at the moment, but keeping healthy, both in your mind, general and oral health is vital to get us through this time.

Remember the routine

We’re all going through a huge change at the moment, so keeping a few habits consistent can give us great comfort, plus it’s quite important for your teeth too! Make sure to brush your teeth for two minutes, first thing in the morning (before breakfast) and last thing before bed, floss once a day and clean that tongue!

 

Stress can affect your oral health

When we feel anxious and stressed, we can express this through habits like nail biting and chewing on the ends of pens and pencils. Not only is this not the most hygienic of habits, but it can wear down your teeth and even chip or crack them, which is the last dental disaster you need right now. A cup of tea is not only that hug in a mug that we all need right now, but it also occupies your hands, preventing you from biting down on your nails. Alternatively, chew some sugar-free gum or give yourself a manicure to help lift your mood and prevent you biting your nails.

 

Try to limit your sugar intake

Hands up if you’ve found yourself heading to the kitchen in hunt for a snack every hour while working from home?! We wouldn’t dare tell you to cut all sugary food and drinks during this time, but it’s good to be mindful about how much you’re consuming. Try to limit sugary treats and alcohol but when you do have them, drink a glass of water after and chew sugar-free gum to help produce saliva, which helps to protect your teeth.

 

Other tips to help you get through this time

Daily life doesn’t feel normal right now and this can cause a lot of anxiety. There are many online workouts to get the endorphins running and meditation apps to help calm your mind. Alternatively, switch off the news, pick up a hobby, or finally start to clear out that drawer (we all have one!) that you’ve been meaning to do since 2014!

 

Remember to keep positive, be gentle with yourself, spread good vibes, stay home and WE WILL BEAT THIS!
