3 ways to overcome your dental fear
14th February 2019
Fear and anxiety are strange things. People are afraid of many things, from flying to spiders and visiting the dentist. Even though we know most fears are irrational, it doesn’t stop the fear or allow us to overcome it. You might be able to go through life avoiding some fears (letting your housemate deal with the spider while you stand on a chair!) however, when it comes to your oral health, avoiding the dentist can have serious detrimental effects on your health and happiness.
Let’s talk
We take dental phobia very seriously and are exceptionally attentive in the standard of care before, during and after treatment. Let us know if you’re feeling anxious and we will ensure to explain each detail about your treatment and won’t rush you into any procedure until you’re happy and comfortable.
We are committed to providing you with a calm and comfortable experience, starting from meeting our reception team, through to seeing our clinicians in the treatment rooms. Our clinics are peaceful, modern places, designed to give you a stress-free experience and with our experienced clinicians by your side, you will be sure to receive the best patient care.
Conquer the fear of pain
Fear of pain is a very common reason for avoiding the dentist and usually stems from an early dental experience that was unpleasant or from dental “pain and horror” stories told by others. However, thanks to the many modern advances in dentistry, most of today’s dental procedures are considerably less painful or even pain-free.
We are frequently complimented by our new patients on how quick, easy and painless our treatments are. This does not happen by accident. Of course we use local anaesthetic but in order to minimise the initial injection we use the finest needles available together with a painless topical spray, which numbs the area and makes the needle painless.
We take pain relief and your sense of comfort very seriously and we aim to provide 100% pain-free dentistry calmly and comfortably.
Sedation
We can also arrange for an anaesthetist to come into the practice and provide IV sedation for treatment. Sedation puts the patient in a very relaxed state so you feel no stress or anxiety whatsoever and unlike general anaesthetic where you are “asleep” with IV sedation, you are conscious but made to feel more comfortable with a “semi-awake” state of reduced anxiety. You will most likely have little memory of the dental procedure, however, you are able to respond to verbal commands, or to a light physical touch.
