8 Invisalign myths debunked
8th June 2021
Traditional braces and teeth straightening were once only considered for severe crowding and misaligned teeth, however with rise of cosmetic dentistry and the invention of the virtually invisible braces, people seeking ways to improve both major and minor crowding have sky-rocketed in the last decade!
To help separate fact from fiction, we’re debunking some of the most common myths about Invisalign.
1. Results with Invisalign are not as good as traditional braces
False. While not everyone is a candidate for Invisalign, both orthodontic options offer the same results for qualifying cases. Rest assured, Invisalign has been proven to be just as effective as traditional braces, as each custom-made aligner moves your teeth a little at a time, eventually getting them to a beautiful, straight smile.
2. The aligners give you a lisp
This depends. Some patients don’t notice any difference with their speech and others do have a slight lisp to begin with. However, most of the time you will quickly adapt within the first few days of wearing the aligners.
3. Invisalign is very painful
As Invisalign is made from thin smart-track material and is custom made for you, it requires no tightening, unlike traditional braces. However, it might take a few days to get used to the mild discomfort and pressure on the teeth.
4. It’s more expensive than traditional braces
Another false myth and again one that depends on your case. For some, Invisalign is more cost effective to fixed braces. While the cost of making the aligners at the lab might be pricey, your appointments can be shorter and less frequent to that of traditional braces. However, prices do differ, so book an initial consultation to get an idea of what would be best for you.
5. Aligners get easily stained and therefore become visible
You should remove your aligners when eating or drinking, clean them frequently and replace them every 2 weeks, so they shouldn’t get stained if you follow these instructions.
6. It takes a long time to see results
Another common myth. A great thing about Invisalign is that you’ll start to see your teeth move just a few weeks into treatment and we can also show you your Invisalign journey before you even begin!
7. It’s just for teenagers
Whether you’re 16 or 66, nothing should stop you getting the smile you want. There is no age limit on Invisalign and while they are popular amongst teens and young adults, they’re growing in popularity with older people too. Some adults may be hesitant and have concerns about how the aligners fit into their work and social life. However, because they’re practically invisible and removable, they don’t interfere with any aspects of your daily life and can carry on as normal.
8. I can do it myself
Nowadays it’s possible to order aligners online and straighten your teeth at home. Although these straightening systems may look identical to Invisalign, they are nowhere near as precise or safe for you. Straightening your teeth without the supervision of a qualified dentist can put your oral health at risk and lead to permanent damage.
